HONOLULU — Two hat tricks over the weekend helped University of Hawai'i senior attacker
Bernadette Doyle claim her second Big West Women's Water Polo Player of the Week award of the season on Wednesday.
Doyle finished a three-match road trip with a team-high eight goals on 51.7% shooting, six assists and seven steals to help the Rainbow Wahine (18-4, 7-0 Big West) secure the outright Big West regular-season title and extend their conference winning streak to a program-record 15 consecutive regular-season victories.
Doyle also earned the award on March 19 and this week's honor is the third of her career. Between Doyle and fellow senior
Jordan Wedderburn, UH has claimed the award in four of the last five weeks. The 'Bows' total of six awards this season marks a program record, passing the previous mark of five set last year.
Doyle tallied two goals, three assists and three steals in a 12-7 win over No. 11 UC San Diego to begin the road trip. In a non-conference matchup with No. 4 UCLA, she posted three goals to earn her 10th hat trick of the season. Doyle was equally impactful on the defensive side with three steals in a loss to the Bruins. She concluded the regular season with another three-goal performance in a 14-4 win over Cal State Fullerton, notching her 21st career hat trick.
Doyle closed the regular season as the team leader in assists (34) and steals (40) and she ranks second in points (80), and third in goals (46). She has 122 goals, 99 assists and 118 steals in her career and is one assist away from becoming the second player in program history to reach triple digits in all three categories.
UH is ranked fourth in this week's Collegiate Water Polo Association Women's Varsity poll and the ACWPC National Top 25.
The Rainbow Wahine have a week off before returning to action at the Big West Championship set for Friday, April 25 to Sunday, April 27. The 'Bows enter the tournament as the No. 1 seed and begin their title defense in the quarterfinals on April 25 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time (7 a.m. Hawai'i Time) at the Anteater Aquatics Complex in Irvine, Calif.
