Softball Splits Doubleheader to Win Series at Cal State Fullerton

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FULLERTON, Calif.—In their final at-bat of the series, the University of Hawai'i softball team (20-13, 5-4 Big West) rallied to score five runs in the seventh en route to a come-from-behind, 6-2 win to clinch the series 2-1, stunning the defending champions, Cal State Fullerton. Hawai'i split Saturday doubleheader with the Titans as CSF won the DH opener, 5-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Anderson Family Field.
 
It is the third time since 1986 that UH won an away series at Cal State Fullerton. UH won in Fullerton in 2013 and '15,

The Titans' took a 1-0 lead in the first on a solo home run by Natalie Lozano.
 
In the second, Cal State Fullerton added two runs Suicide squeeze executed by Kate Verhoef with one out and runners on second and third. The Titans added another run to their lead with a sacrifice fly to right by Colby McDlinton to drive in Kristalyn Romulo for the 3-0 lead.
 
CSF's Lozano struck again in the third, hitting her second solo home run of her of the game to give the Titans a 4-0 lead.
 
Hawai'i had their best opportunity to score in the fifth. Cierra Yamamoto drew a one out walk and Chloe Borges followed with a double to right to put runners at second and third. But pinch hitter Kayara Tuiloma then hit a shallow chopper to short, but on the play Yamamoto broke for home and was thrown out at the plate for the second out. A strike out snuffed out the UH rally.
 
Ava Arce lifted the Titans' third home run of the game over the centerfield fence for a 5-0 lead.
 
UH starter Macy Brandl suffered the loss, dropping her record to 8-5. She allowed four runs on six hits in two plus innings of work. Reliever Millie Fidge gave up one run on five hits with a walk and two strikeouts throwing the final four innings.
 
Cal State Fullerton starter Eva Hurtado tossed a three-hit shutout over the 'Bows with three walks and six strikeouts.

UH starter Addison Kostrencich earned her second win of the weekend to improve to a league-leading 11-7 overall record. She allowed two runs on five hits with zero walks and two strikeouts to earn the complete game victory.
 
The Titans broke open a scoreless game in the fourth. Arce hit her second home run of the doubleheader. Lopez then doubled to right and came around to score on a throwing error on the rightfielder.
 
Hawai'i got one run back in the top of the fifth on an RBI-single to the pitcher by Carys Murakami to drive in Chloe Borges. UH went on to load the bases with two outs, but a groundout to third thwarted the UH rally.
 
In the seventh, Hawai'i batted around the order and scored five runs on five hits to overtake Cal State Fullerton, 6-2. Larissa Goshi and Martinez led the inning off with back-to-back singles to start the inning.. The Titans then lifted their starter Trisa McCleskey and entered in Hurtado for her second appearance of the day after throwing the complete game in the first game. Murakami then executed a sacrifice bunt to push both runners into scoring position. Liliana Thomas then drilled a double to centerfield to score both Goshi and Martinez to take a 3-2 lead.  Jamie McGaughey was then hit-by-pitch and Milan Ah Yat drew a walk to load the bases with one out. Fidge then pinch hit and her check swing single rolled to the third baseman allowing Thomas to score and the bases remained loaded. After a strikeout, Borges hit a single past the shortstop to plate both McGaughey and Ah Yat. Goshi picked up another single before a strikeout ended the rally with UH ahead by four runs.
 
In the bottom of the seventh, the Titans were retired in order as UH held on for the win.
 
CSF starter McCleskey took the loss dropping her record to 8-7. She allowed three runs on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts in six plus innings of work. Hurado was able to get two outs in the seventh, but gave up three runs on four hits with a walk and a strikeout. Leanna Garcia got the final out on a strikeout.
 
The Rainbow Wahine return home this week to take on UC Riverside n a three-game conference series. UH will face the Highlanders in a single game on Friday, April 4 starting at 6:00 p.m. HT. The two teams will conclude the series with a Saturday doubleheader on April 5 beginning at 2:00 p.m. HT.
