Box Score 2 HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (17-12, 3-4 Big West) split their doubleheader to open their Big West series against UC Davis on Saturday. The Aggies scored eight runs in the eighth inning to pull away for a 12-4 win to open the series, but the 'Bows bounced right back in the second game as UH starter
Macy Brandl fired a one-hit, complete game shutout as in a 6-0 victory at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
UC Davis 12, Hawai'i 4 (8 innings)
UC Davis jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first after a two-run homer and a solo home run by Grace Killday and Marley Panziera respectively.
The Aggies added another run with two outs in the second. With a runner on third, Mickey Buscemi beat out the throw from second for an RBI single and a 4-0 lead.
Hawai'I started to chip away at their deficit.
Liliana Thomas led off the bottom of the second with a solo home run that sailed over the leftfield fence. It marked her fourth homer as a Rainbow Wahine.
The Rainbow Wahine posted a pair of runs in the fourth. UH loaded the bases on three singles. With one out,
Carys Murakami drove a single through the left side of the infield to score Kayara Tuiloma from third.
Milan Ah Yat followed by lifting a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score
Maycen Gibbs from third to cut their deficit to just one run, 4-3.
Hawai'i knotted the score at 4-4 in the fifth. UH loaded the bases with one out. Pinch hitter Millie Fidge then battled at the plate with a nine pitch at-bat fouling off the last four pitches to stay alive. Fidge then drilled an opposite-field single to right to score Thomas.
The game was tied at the end of seven complete innings and went to extras. But in the eighth, the Aggies scored eight runs on eight hits to pull away for a 12-4 win.
In the loss,
Izabella Martinez tied her career high going 4-for-5 at the plate.with a double.
Hawai'i starter
Addison Kostrencich suffered the loss dropping to 8-7 overall. She gave up eight runs on 10 hits in 7.1 innings of work. Reliever Fidge got the final two outs in the eighth, but allowed four runs on five hits with a walk.
UC Davis' Caroline Grimes did not figure in the decision. She allowed four runs on 11 hits with three strikeouts. Reliever Ashley Sawai earned the win to improve to 7-7. She tossed 3.2 scoreless innings with three strikeouts.

The Rainbow Wahine responded after falling in the first game with a 6-0 shutout over the Aggies. UH starter
Macy Brandl fired a one-hit, complete game shutout to improve to 8-4 overall. She had three walks and five strikeouts in the win.
The 'Bows got on the scoreboard first, posting a pair of runs in the second. McGaughey led the frame off with a walk. Thomas then executed a sac bunt to push McGaughey to second.
Ellyanna Cinzori then drilled a double to the left-center gap to score McGaughey from second. Later with two outs,
Chloe Borges hit a single to center that scored Cinzori from second for the 2-0 lead.
Thomas led off the bottom of the fourth with a first pitch solo home run to center. It marked her second homer of the doubleheader and her fifth as a Rainbow Wahine.
In the sixth, the 'Bows'
Jamie McGaughey blasted a solo home run to leftfield. It was McGaughey's seventh round-tripper of the season. UH kept the inning alive, loading the bases with two outs.
Izabella Martinez laced an opposite-field single through the 5-6 hole to drive in both
Cierra Yamamoto and Borges to a 6-0 lead.
UC Davis' Grimes suffered the loss, drooping her record to 4-10 overall. She allowed two runs on two hits with a walk and two strikeouts in the first two innings. Sawai came in again in relief. She gave up a run on a hit with a walk and three strikeouts in three innings. Alyssa Dethlefson allowed three runs on three hits with a walk in the final frame.
The two teams will play the deciding game of the three game series on Sunday, March 23. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. HT at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
