Bernadette Doyle was named the Big West women's water polo Player of the Week on Wednesday after helping the Rainbow Wahine pull out a dramatic conference win over No. 6 Long Beach State last Saturday.
Doyle posted a hat trick and scored the game-winning goal in sudden death in Hawaii's 9-8 overtime win over the Beach at Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. She picked up the Big West award for the second time in her career and is the third UH player to earn the weekly honor this season.
The senior scored her first goal in the third quarter to break a 3-3 tie and spark a 3-0 UH scoring run. She came up with a crucial steal and score in the first overtime period and sealed the win with a fast-break score 25 seconds into the sudden death period for UH's first golden goal since 2023.
Doyle scored on three of her five shots, assisted on a goal and drew three exclusions. She also contributed a steal and two field blocks to UH's defensive effort.
Doyle has scored at least three goals in eight matches this season and ranks third on the team with 34. She's also second on the team in assists (21) and points (55). Defensively, Doyle leads the 'Bows with 29 steals and nine field blocks.
The Rainbow Wahine (13-3, 3-0 Big West) remained at No. 3 in the Collegiate Water Polo Association Women's Varsity Top 25 and at No. 4 in the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches poll released on Wednesday.
The 'Bows take a break from conference play this week and continue their four-match homestand by taking on No. 25 Pacific (9-7, 3-1 Golden Coast Conference) on Saturday, March 22 at the DKAC. The opening sprint is set for 6 p.m.
