NEWS & NOTES• Hawai'i recorded a 2-4 record last week, starting with a 2-1 win in its first road game of 2025 at Cal Baptist. At the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, UH went 1-4 with a 4-0 shutout victory over Nevada/ UH fell late by one run to BYU, 4-3 and one run in a walkoff loss to LMU. 5-4. UH also fell in a battle royale to Saint Mary's (CA), 9-7 and to No. 23 San Diego State 8-0 in five innings in the tourney finale.
• Senior pitcher
Addison Kostrencich earned Big West Pitcher of the Week honors on Monday after posting a 2-1 record last week. She fired a complete-game shutout in a 4-0 win vs. Nevada and opened the week with a 2-1 win at Cal Baptist. For the week, Kostrencich had a 2.17 ERA in 19.1 innings pitched with a walk and 11 strikeouts. Overall, she is 5-3 with a team-best 2.35 ERA in a team-high 47.2 innings pitched with eight walks to 24 strikeouts.
• Overall, senior catcher and leadoff hitter
Izabella Martinez started the season red-hot. She reached base safely in the first 15 games of the season and was held off the basepaths for the first time in UH's last game vs. San Diego State. Martinez continues to lead the 'Bows with a .373 batting average. She holds team-highs with 19 hits, four doubles and a .475 on-base percentage. Martinez, who has started behind the dish for all four years, continues to call all her own games and she has thrown out six runners attempting to steal to rank her No. 7 nationally in DI. Martinez had a team-best six-game hitting streak from Feb. 15-21 and leads UH with four multiple-hit games.
• Last week, sophomore shortstop
Milan Ah Yat led UH in six games with a .385 batting average (5-for-12). She had two doubles with five RBI and a team best .579 on-base percentage. She drew a team-high six walks during the week. She hit safely in the first four games of the Mary Nutter and she went 2-for-2 with two walks against her former school LMU. She had one error defensively, but made eight put-outs with 10 assists for a .947 fielding percentage.
• After having to sit out the first 10 games due to an NCAA ruling, junior rightfielder
Maycen Gibbs made an immediate impace for UH, hitting .350 and scoring a team-high five runs while driving in a team-best six RBI. She was tied for the team-lead racking up seven hits for the week which included a pair of doubles and a triple.
• The "new look" lineup for 2025 has basically remained constant on defense with a little shuffling in the offensive lineup. Except for Martinez catching, UH features an entirely new infield due to graduation last year. At first base is sophomore
Jamie McGaughey who played sparingly at third base last season. The three other infield positions were secured by three local transfers who came home to play at UH. Junior
Carys Murakami has locked down second base after spending two years at CSUN.
Milan Ah Yat spent her freshman year at LMU before choosing to transfer to UH where she is the incumbent shortstop. And
Liliana Thomas has taken a little circuitous route to UH, starting at Arizona State for two seasons, then one year at LMU, then returning to the islands to play third base for the 'Bows.
• Freshman Kayara Tuiloma started thr first 10 games in right, but has made the move to left for the last six games last week. Although her batting average has dipped below .200 after the Mary Nutter, she leads UH with 10 runs scored. She is 7-for-38 at the plate with a triple and two home runs with eight RBI. She is fourth on the team with seven walks.
• The one position still up in the air to replace departed senior
Haley Johnson from last season is designated player Four players have gotten the start at DP through the first 16 games--Millie Fidge (7),
Kolbi Kochi (6),
Alyssa Nakagawa (2) and
Ellyanna Cinzori (1).
