HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team split their doubleheader on Friday night on Day 2 of the Hawai'i Fall Invitational. Fullerton College edged out Hawai'i, 1-0, but then the UH rallied to rout Hawai'i Pacific, 12-0 in the nightcap at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Fullerton College 1, Hawai'i 0
The Hornets scored the only run of the game in the top of the third. UH got the first out on a comebacker to starting pitcher Millie Fidge, but then Fullerton strung together back-to-back hits with a double a an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead.
Fidge fired a complete game in the loss. She allowed the one run on five hits with one walk and four strikeouts.
Fullerton's pitchers shut down the Hawai'i offense, allowing five hits with three walks and one strikeout.
Hawai'i 12, Hawai'i Pacific 0
The 'Bows bounced back in their second game, pulling away to down Hawai'i Pacific 12-0. UH tallied nine runs in the first two innings alone, while starting pitcher Hannah Pitts stymied the Sharks on offense. Pitts fired a complete game shutout, scattering six hits with five strikeouts and no walks. .
The 'Bows had runners at first and second and no outs when
Maycen Gibbs laid down a sac bunt to push both runners into scoring position, but a walk to
Ellyanna Cinzori loaded the bases. After a strikeout, Bailey Nagasako drew another walk to force home Briana Maio-Silva. Later, a fielding error on the second baseman off a grounder by
Maya Ichimura allowed both
Cierra Yamamoto and Cinzori to cross the plate for the early 3-0 lead.
In the second, Hawai'i drew another walk with the bases loaded to begin the second inning. Later with the bases still loaded, Nagasako drilled a bases clearing double to extend UH's lead to 9-0.
Hawai'i added a run in the fourth as Abby Sasaki drove in Gibbs with an RBI hit. And in the fifth, the 'Bows tacked on their final two runs to cap their scoring at 12-0.
The first game of the day ended in a 4-4 tie between Fullerton College and HPU.'
The Hawai'i Fall Invitational is off on Saturday, but will resume for its final day of competition on Sunday. HPU will take on Chaminade at 10:00 a.m.. Hawai'i will then face Hawai'i Hilo at 12:30 p.m. and Fullerton College and the Vulcans will close out the tourney at 3:00 p.m. at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
