Water Polo Splits Opening Day at the Legacy Crown

COSTA MESA, Calif.— The University of Hawai'i women's water polo team split the opening day of the Legacy Crown, defeating UC San Diego 15-14 before dropping a hard-fought battle to UCLA 12-10 on Saturday at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, Calif.

UH resumes action against Fresno State at 8:00 a.m. PT (6:00 a.m. HT) at Orange Coast College, followed by another match later in the day determined by the morning results.

MATCH 1 - UH 15, UCSD 14

Four Rainbow Wahine recorded hat tricks, including a team-high four goals from Camille Radosavljevic. Goalkeepers Evelyn Miller and Nalani Yim combined for 11 saves, while UH shot 15-for-24 (63%) from the field and converted 4 of 6 penalty shots.

Radosavljevic delivered the dagger with 1:43 in the fourth quarter, lofting in what became the deciding goal to help UH advance to the quarterfinals.

Agatha Weston wasted no time in her return to action, scoring the first goal of the match after 19 seconds to spark a four-goal first quarter. Esmee Roijen added two goals, and Radosavljevic scored once to give UH a 4-3 edge after eight minutes.

The 'Bows continued the attack in the second, tacking on four more scores. Freshman Ariadna Temprano led the charge with two goals in the quarter, and Raha Peiravani and Radosavljevic each added goals. UCSD matched UH's goal total in the quarter, and the 'Bows held an 8-7 lead at halftime.

UH surrendered two goals to begin the third quarter, before Weston converted on a penalty shot to tie the game at 9-9. The Tritons scored two more goals, but UH captured the momentum with a goal from Roni Perlman that ricocheted off the post and into the net with one second left in the quarter.

The 'Bows won the fourth quarter sprint and immediately capitalized with a penalty shot goal from Radosavljevic. UCSD briefly tied it, but goals from Weston and Roijen — each earning hat-tricks — helped UH reclaim the lead. Temprano then completed her own hat trick, converting from the penalty line at 4:29, helping UH close out the one-goal thriller.

Weston kicked off action in the third quarter, capitalizing on a power play to pull UH within one. After a UCLA response, Temprano found the back of the net for her second goal of the match. The Bruins found another score in the final seconds of the quarter to maintain a two-point advantage.

The Rainbow Wahine found a rhythm offensively in the final frame, sparked by a skipped strike from Weston, followed by another goal by Perlman, who buried one from deep. Temprano and Radosavljevic added goals, but UH couldn't erase the deficit and moved to 1-1 in tournament play.
