IRVINE, Calif.—University of Hawai'i men's tennis player
Azuma Visaya earned his second-straight Big West Player of the Week award after winning a pair of No. 1 singles matches in two dual matches against Arkansas last week.
Visaya, a junior from Honolulu O'ahu is currently ranked at No. 77. He won two matches this past week in dramatic, third set super tie-breaker fashion. In the first dual match vs. the Razorbacks, Visaya dropped the first set against Bozo Barun by a break. Visaya reversed things by winning the second set to force a super tie-breaker. Visaya outlasted Barun for the win, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (11-9).
In Visaya's second win of the week, he again came from a set down but found a way to comeback for a nailbiting victory. Arkansas' Lukas Palovic won the first set, but then Visaya clawed his way back into the match by winning the second set in a tie-breaker by winning the final three points to force a third set super tie-breaker. In the deciding 10-point breaker, Visaya pulled away behind some solid serving down the stretch for the win, 2-6, 7-6 (8-6), 1-0 (10-7).
In doubles, Visaya and partner
Tianhao Hou fell on the No. 1 court in the first match by a break to Arkansas' Connor Smillie and Marino Jakic, 6-4. In the second match, Visaya and Hou were knotted in a 6-6 battle with Barun and Jakic when the point was clinched by the Razorbacks.
In singles, Visaya is 3-3 overall and 2-2 in dual matches.
