Abshier Earns Academic All-District Recognition

Hawai'i left-handed pitcher Randy Abshier earned College Sports Communicators Academic All-District recognition Tuesday for his efforts on the field and in the classroom.

Abshier ended the season on a roll, posting a 0.36 ERA in his final four games giving up just two runs (one earned) on 11 hits with 23 strikeouts over 25.1 innings during that stretch. He worked 6.1 innings or longer in three of those four starts and earned the win in three of those four appearances. Abshier also earned his undergraduate degree in sociology in May.

The San Diego, Calif., native finished the year 5-4 with 90 strikeouts to just 24 walks in 15 starts on the mound. He posted an ERA of 4.00 in a team-leading 81.0 innings pitched. Abshier finished his career that included three seasons at Arizona and two at Hawai'i with 201 strikeouts over 195.1 innings pitched with a record of 16-7 and a 4.19 ERA in 70 appearances.

Abshier also earned Big West Pitcher of the Week honors twice this season, following performances against Rice (Mar. 9) and Cal State Fullerton (May 24). He matched a career-high with 11 strikeouts over seven innings of one-run ball against the Owls while working eight innings and fanning eight vs. the Titans in his final collegiate outing.

In order to be eligible to receive CSC Academic All-District recognition, student-athletes must carry a cumulative GPA of at least 3.50 while pitching at least 25.0 innings. Abshier is just the sixth player in UH history to earn academic all-district honors.
