IRVINE, Calif. – After spinning five perfect innings out of the bullpen in Friday's win over CSUN,
Alex Giroux earned Big West Pitcher of the Week honors for the first time in his career Monday.
The junior set down all 15 batters he faced out of the bullpen after entering the game with Hawai'i up 3-2 in the fifth inning to earn his fifth win of the season. Giroux ended with a line of five innings pitched with a season-high eight strikeouts.
The Lake Oswego, Ore. native preserved a one-run lead over the final five innings against one of top hitting teams in the Big West by becoming the first UH pitcher to retire at least 15 straight batters since 2021 (Cade Halemanu).
Giroux was especially dominant from the fifth through seventh innings, punching out six straight Matador batters over that span to keep UH up by one. The righty worked ahead all night, throwing a first-pitch strike to 14 of the 15 batters he faced to pick up his second career relief win when pitching five innings or longer (2023 vs. North Dakota State).
