2024 Women's Water Polo Season Review

SEASON HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Rainbow Wahine rolled to a record-breaking 23-4 season in Maureen Cole's 13th and final year as head coach. 
     
  • UH spent 11 weeks at No. 2 in the national rankings this season finished at No. 3 in the ACWPC and Collegiate Water Polo Association polls, the highest final placement in program history.
     
  • The Rainbow Wahine defeated two teams ranked No. 1 in the country. They knocked off two-time defending national champion Stanford 9-7 in overtime (Jan. 20) for the program’s first win over the Cardinal. UH defeated USC 10-6 on Feb. 4, snapping a 27-game losing streak in the series with the Trojans.

 

  • The Rainbow Wahine earned the Big West’s automatic bid to the NC Women’s Water Polo Championship by sweeping through the conference tournament in Davis, Calif. UH went undefeated (10-0) through the Big West regular-season schedule and tournament for the first time since joining the conference in 2013.

 

  • UH entered the NCAA Championship with its highest seeding in program history at No. 2. The ‘Bows’ previous high seed was No. 4 in 2005, ‘06, ‘09 and ‘13 and they placed fourth each of those years.

 

  • The Rainbow Wahine defeated Princeton 11-6 in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship to earn their first win in the tournament since 2015.

 

  • The ’Bows’ season ended with a 9-6 loss to host California in the NCAA semifinals at the Spieker Aquatics Complex. All four UH losses this season came against the NCAA finalists (two each to Cal and eventual national champion UCLA).

 

  • Bia Mantellato Dias earned her second straight Big West Player of the Year award.

 

  • Maureen Cole was voted Big West Coach of the Year for the fifth time.

 

  • Mantellato Dias was joined on the All-Big West first team by senior Alba Bonamusa Boix, junior Bernadette Doyle and freshman Daisy Logtens. Senior Lot Stertefeld made the second team and senior Lucia Gomez de la Puente earned honorable mention recognition. Logtens and Agatha Weston were voted to the All-Freshman Team.

 

  • Bernadette Doyle was named MVP of the Big West Championship following her four-goal, four-steal performance against Long Beach State in the tournament final.

 

  • Bia Mantellato Dias, Bernadette Doyle and Alba Bonamusa Boix were named to the National Collegiate Water Polo Championship All-Tournament team. Mantellato Dias and Doyle made the first team and Bonamusa Boix was named to the second team.

 

  • Bia Mantellato Dias became UH’s 13 th ACWPC first-team All-American and first since 2021. Bernadette Doyle was named to the second team, Alba Bonamusa Boix and Daisy Logtens made the third team, and Lucia Gomez de la Puente was an honorable mention selection. UH’s five All-America honorees set a program record.

 

  • Alba Bonamusa Boix closed her career with 208 goals and 107 assists, becoming the first UH player to post at least 200 goals and 100 assists.

 

  • Bia Mantellato Dias became the first UH player to be named a finalist for the Peter J. Cutino
    Award, the most prestigious honor in collegiate water polo.

ASSISTANT COACH OF THE YEAR

Coach James Robinson earned the ACWPC Women's Assistant Coach of the Year honor and was selected to be the next Head Coach of the Rainbow Wahine starting with the 2025 season.

RAHA PEIRAVANI EARNS ELITE 90 AWARD

Peiravani earned the Elite 90 award which is given out to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's championships.

ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT HONORS

BIG WEST CHAMPIONS

The Rainbow Wahine secured the Big West title for the first time since 2021, defeating Long Beach State 9-5 in the championship match.

NCAA TOURNAMENT

The Rainbow Wahine earned the No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament, the highest seeding in program history. UH defeated Princeton in the opening round, but fell short to No. 3 Cal in the semifinals to conclude a historic season.

'BOWS DEFEAT PRINCETON IN QUARTERFINALS

UH earned its first win in the NCAA Championship since 2015 and reached the semifinals for the first time since 2013 with an 11-6 victory over Princeton.

RAINBOW WAHINE TAKE DOWN TOP-RANKED OPPONENT TWICE

UH defeated back-to-back national champion and preseason No. 1 Stanford 9-7 in the Fresno State Polo-Palooza and later defeated No. 1 USC 10-6 in the Triton Invitational.

The University of Hawai’i women’s water polo team closed head coach Maureen Cole’s tenure with a historic 2024 season capped by a trip to Women’s National Collegiate Water Polo Championship in Berkeley, Calif. In Cole’s 13th and final season leading the program, the Rainbow Wahine captured the Big West regular-season and tournament titles while earning the highest national ranking and NCAA Championship seed in school history. The 'Bows finished the season at 23-4 overall, setting a UH record for winning percentage.

  • Winningest and longest tenured coach in program history with a 226-96 (.701) overall record and a conference record of 50-11 (.819) over 13 seasons.

 

  • Six Big West regular season championships (2013, ‘18, ’19, ‘21, ’22, '24).

 

  • Five Big West Championships and five NCAA Tournament appearances (2013, ‘15, ’19, ‘21, ’24).

 

  • Five-time Big West Coach of the Year (2013, ‘15, ’19, ‘21, ’24).

 

  • Produced 25 ACWPC All-Americans and 54 all-conference selections.

 

  • Led UH to five 20-wins seasons.

 

  • In 2024, led UH to its winningest season (23-4) since 2001 and earned the highest ranking (No. 2) and highest finish (No. 3) in program history.
     
  • Joined the program as an assistant coach and spent a total of 18 years on the Rainbow Wahine staff.
