Men's Volleyball Faces UC Santa Barbara In Big West Quarterfinals

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team opens play in the OUTRIGGER Big West Championship with a quarterfinal match-up against sixth-seeded UC Santa Barbara, Thursday, April 18 at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. The Rainbow Warriors (22-6) finished the Big West season with a 5-5 mark and are the No. 3 seed in the tournament while the Gauchos (9-17) finished league play with a 2-8 mark and are seeded sixth. UH swept the season series three weeks ago in Honolulu.

FIRST SERVE
  • UH leads the all-time series with UC Santa Barbara, 62-37 which includes a current 18-match win streak dating back to 2017. UH's last loss to the Gauchos occurred during the 2016 season (April 1 & 2 in Santa Barbara, Calif.).
  • UH also holds a 32-16 advantage in Honolulu, including a current 11-match home win streak dating back to 2015. The Gauchos took both matches in Honolulu during the 2013 campaign.
  • The schools have met in each of the past two Big West Championships, both times in the semifinal round and both wins by UH in straight-sets.
  • UH has an 8-2 advantage against the Gauchos in postseason play, having won the last six meetings dating back to 1998.
  • The winner will meet second-seeded UC Irvine in Friday's semifinals.

  • Hawai'i is 4-1 in semifinal round matches with its only loss to UC San Diego in 2021.
  • UH was the No. 2 seed for two of its titles in 2019 and '22 and was the No. 1 seed for last year's championship. UH was also the No. 1 seed in 2021.
  • Hawai'i previously hosted the Big West Championship in 2019, '21, and '22. Long Beach State hosted and won the title in 2018 and UC Irvine hosted last year's tournament, which UH won.
