SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – University of Hawai'i's
Blaze Akana and
Josh Hayashida each shot 3-over 73 in the first round of the 77
th Western Intercollegiate Monday at the Pasatiempo Golf Club.
Akana was 1-under par through 12 holes before posting bogey-double-triple on holes Nos. 13-15 to drop to 5-over. But the senior battled back and closed with birdies in his final two holes. Hayashida was 2-over at the turn, then posted only one bogey to finish 3-over for the day. The duo are currently tied for 41
st.
As a team, the Rainbow Warriors are in 13
th place at 375. Arizona is the only team under par after a first round 348. Stanford (354) is six strokes back followed by Washington (355), California and Oregon (356).
UW's Taehoon Song is the individual leader at 4-under 66 while teammate Petr Hruby is one stroke back along with Arizona's Sam Sommerhauser and Texas' Nathan Petronzio.
