LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The University of Hawai'i women's golf team completed the first round of the Big West Championship with a 310 and sits in sixth place Sunday at the Spanish Trail Country Club.
The Rainbow Wahine are 14 strokes off the lead currently held by Long Beach State (296). Cal Poly is in second, three strokes off the lead, followed by UC Davis (304), UC Riverside (305), and Cal State Fullerton (307).
UH made the turn in first place at 4-over but the back nine proved to be a challenge as the Rainbow Wahine combined to shoot 18-over par.
Individually, Long Beach State's Jasmine Leovao holds the clubhouse lead at 2-under 70. She was the only golfer among the 45-player field to shoot under par. UCR's Maleyna Gregorio is two strokes back at even par.
Wendy Song and
Kellie Yamane shot the low round for the Rainbow Wahine at 4-over 76 and are currently tied for 12
th place. Song held the individual lead at the turn with a 2-under 34 but went 6-over on her back nine. Yamane was even par at the turn but shot 4-over on the back.
Emiko Sverduk and
Jordyn Parr carded 7-over 79 and are tied for 24
th place while
Monica Johnson posted 89 and is in 45
th place.
The second round is scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. PT start. UH will be paired with UCR and CSU Fullerton and will begin its tee times at 9:20 a.m. PT.
