IRVINE, Calif. – University of Hawai'i's
Louis Sakanoko was named the Big West's Freshman of the Week after a sensational performance in a five-set loss to Long Beach State last Saturday.
The Paris, France native came off the bench as a serving sub in Friday's straight-set loss but entered the match in Set 2 on Saturday and finished with career-highs of 19 kills, 40 attempts, nine digs, and three blocks. He also had one ace and hit for a .250 clip. He posted 10 kills alone is set four.
The award is Sakanoko's second of the season. Earlier this year, he tied the program's single-match ace record with nine against Emmanuel to earn his first Freshman of the Week award. Setter
Tread Rosenthal already has a program-record six Freshman of the Week awards this season.
Sakanoko joined the team one week prior to the start of the season and in time for the spring semester. The rising star has been a member of France's national program including the U22 National Team which recently qualified for the European Championship.
UH has eight of the 11 freshman awards this season.
