Chakas Receives AVCA Weekly Recognition For Second Time

LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Hawai'i outside hitter Spyros Chakas was named the AVCA Division I-II National Player of the Week for the second time this season after leading the Rainbow Warriors to a 3-0 record at the OUTRIGGER Invitational over the weekend.

The Nea Smyrni, Greece native was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player and led Hawai'i to wins over previously-No. 1 Grand Canyon, No. 5 UC Irvine and No. 14 Lewis. Chakas averaged 4.18 kills per set, hitting .422 in the three matches. He also averaged a team-best 1.64 digs per set with four aces and five blocks.

In UH's tourney opener against Lewis, he hit for a career-best .737 clip with 15 kills in 19 attempts and followed that with a team-high 14 kills, hitting .478 with eight digs and two aces against GCU. In the tournament championship match against UCI, he finished with team-high 17 kills with eight digs and three blocks.

The AVCA award is Chakas' third of his career, which is third-most in program history. He also received the award following his performance in UH's two-match sweep of Stanford last month and after last season's series sweep of Ball State.
