HONOLULU — University of Hawai'i guard
Daejah Phillips was named the Big West Women's Basketball Player of the Week on Monday following a career-best performance against Long Beach State over the weekend.
Phillips scored a career-high 29 points while posting one of the most productive and efficient shooting performances in program history in UH's 80-68 road win over the Beach on Saturday at the Walter Pyramid and earned the Big West honor for the second time in the last four weeks.
Phillips went 12 for 14 (85.7%) from the field, falling one made basket short of the UH single-game record for field-goal percentage (with a minimum 10 made FGs) set on Jan. 4, 1998 when Raylene Howard went 13 for 14 against Fresno State. Her point total was UH's highest since
Amy Atwell scored 29 against Baylor on March 18, 2022 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Phillips went into halftime of Saturday's game with seven points on 3-for-4 shooting. She then made her first nine shots of the second half in a 22-point outburst. She scored 16 points in the fourth quarter alone to help UH hold off the Beach and remain in first place in the Big West race.
Her 12 made field goals is the highest single-game total in the Big West this season, all coming in 19 minutes, 41 seconds of playing time off the bench. She drew six fouls and went 4-for-5 from the free-throw line and also finished with four rebounds and two steals.
Phillips won the first Big West Player of the Week award of her career on Feb. 5 and is the third UH player to pick up multiple awards in a season since the Rainbow Wahine rejoined the Big West in 2012, joining
Julissa Tago (two in 2019-20) and Atwell (four in 2021-22).
The Rainbow Wahine (16-9, 13-3 Big West) open their final homestand of the season on Thursday when they face UC Davis (15-12, 11-6) at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. UH closes the home schedule on Saturday against UC Riverside (16-11, 11-6), also at 7 p.m.
