Basketball Clinic And Doubleheader On Tap For Maui This Weekend

For the second time in as many weekends, the University of Hawaii men's and women's basketball teams make their way to the neighbor islands. In conjunction with the Hawai'i Tourism Authority (HTA) and County of Maui's Office of Economic Development, UH will participate in Kinipōpō Hīna'i ma Pukalani, 'Bows vs. Silverswords, to be held on November 1 and 2 on Maui.

The weekend will start on Friday, November 1 with a basketball clinic to be conducted by the UH and Chaminade men's teams at Lahainaluna High School's Jimmie H. Greig Gym from 5-6 p.m. The clinic is open to keiki in grades four to six. As space is limited, registration is required and can be completed here.

Two exhibition games between UH and Chaminade University will be held at Kamehameha Schools Maui in Pukalani on Saturday, November 2. The women's game will begin at 2 p.m. and the men's game will begin at 5 p.m. The games will feature entertainers and food and drinks for purchase.

Admission to both Friday's keiki clinic and Saturday's doubleheader is free. Autograph sessions follow both the men's and women's contests on Saturday.

'BOWS NOTES
  • The Rainbow Wahine basketball team competes for the first time on the island of Maui.
  • This will be the first visit to Maui for the men's team since Nov. 21, 2014 when UH upset Pittsburgh, 74-70, at War Memorial Gym in Wailuku.
  • The Rainbow Warriors have played three other times on Maui in the last two decades (2003, '10 and '11)
  • UH competed in the 2003 Maui Invitational, which included a 68-54 semifinal win over Chaminade at the Lahaina Civic Center.
  • The 'Bows returned to Lahaina in December 2010 when they defeated Chicago State in a stand-alone game. The next year, UH defeated North Carolina A&T in a game played in Wailuku.
  • Both the UH men's and women's teams opened exhibition play last weekend at UH Hilo.
  • The men pulled out a 64-61 win over the Vulcans on Oct. 25 behind Tanner Christensen's 13 points and 10 rebounds, including the game-winning three-point play with four seconds left.
  • Two days later, the Rainbow Wahine took care of UHH with a 69-50 win. Three players scored in double-figures, led by Brooklyn Rewers' 13 points.
  • Following this weekend's action, the men open the regular season with the OUTRIGGER Rainbow Classic, Nov. 8, 10 and 11. Pacific, San Jose State and Life Pacific join this year's field.
