IRVINE, Calif.—Four University of Hawai'i men's tennis players earned All-Big West accolades on Thursday, led by four-time All-Big West First Team selection
Andre Ilagan. Ilagan and partner
Lucas Labrunie were named to the All-BW First team.
Axel Labrunie was selected to the All-Big West Second Team in singles while earning Honorable Mention honors in doubles with partner
Kilian Maitre.
Ilagan becomes the first UH player and just the seventh men's tennis player in Big West history to be named to the conference's First Team for all four years. Ilagan joins Dennis Lajola, who played in the WAC from 2008-'11, to be the only Rainbow Warrior to earn four, all-conference first team honors during their career. In 2023, Ilagan recorded a team-best 16-3 overall record while going 4-0 in conference matches. He won his last 15 decisions in a row. During has UH career, he has been ranked in the ITA poll for 38 total weeks—including the last 36-consecutive weeks dating back to Dec. 8, 2022. Ilagan has a career record of 67-28 in singles; 47-22 in doubles. After being voted Big West Player of the Week twice this season, he finishes his career with a UH-record eight BW Player of the Week awards—moving him into fourth-place all time in the Big West history.
With a season of eligibility left,
Lucas Labrunie returned for the 2023 season for one last go-around. He and doubles partner Ilagan rejoined forces and was once again earning All-Big West honors for the third time. In 2019, Ilagan and
Lucas Labrunie were named as a doubles Honorable Mention selection and they combined to earn First Team honors in both 2021 and this season. This season Ilagan and the elder Labrunie brother posted a 5-4 overall doubles record.
After honorable mention singles honors last year,
Axel Labrunie raised his game and was voted to the All-Big West Singles Second Team in 2023. This season, he played primarily at No. 2 for most of the season. Overall he notched an 8-7 overall record while going 2-2 in conference. He finished the season strong winning three of his last four decisions.
The younger Labrunie, Axel paired with Maitre to garner honorable mention in doubles. For
Axel Labrunie, it is the third-straight season earning honorable mention honors in doubles and Maitre's first post-season honor. Together the pair from France recorded a team-best 13-3 overall record. The duo won their first 12-straight decisions of the season.
