Softball Scores Three Late, Wins By Walkoff Over UC Davis

HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (30-21, 13-12 BW) scored three runs in the final two innings for a walk-off win over UC Davis (27-20, 13-12 BW), 3-2. Brianna Lopez earned her 14th complete-game win while designated player Haley Johnson hit a clutch, two-run double to tie the score at 2-2 in the sixth and UH scores the walkoff win on a throwing error on Friday night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Lopez improved to 16-11 overall and evened her conference record to 8-8 with the win. She allowed two runs on six hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.

UC Davis' Anna Dethlefson led the game off with a double and came around to score on a couple of ground balls. UH turned its league-leading 19th double play of the season to end the inning, 5-4-3 (Ka'ena Keliinoi-to-Rachel Sabourin-to-Mya'Liah Bethea).

In the bottom of the fourth, Keliinoi picked up her second hit and Izabella Martinez  looped a double that fell between the third baseman, shortstop and left and bounced toward the third base fence with one out. But a pair of strikeouts snuffed out the UH rally.

The Aggies struck again with two outs in the sixth. Libbie McMahon dropped a double into right and then came home on an RBI single by Bella Pahulu to extend UCD's lead to 2-0.

Gin and Keliinoi led off the sixth with back-to-back singles. After a ground out by Martinez pushed both runners into scoring position, Johnson came through in the clutch with a double to the left-center gap to drive in both Gin and Keliinoi to tie the game at 2-2.

With one out in the seventh, Cira Bartolotti reached on a fielding error on the shortstop. Later with two outs, Gin laced a single to right. On the play, Bartolotti hustled into third, but the throw from right to third bounced past to the covering leftfielder. On the play, Bartolotti was standing on the bag when the leftfielder fired home wide left up the first base line allowing Bartolotti to score standing up for the walk off win.

UC Davis' Kennedi Brown suffered the loss, throwing 6.2 innings. She allowed three runs on seven hits with a walk and five strikeouts.

The win was UH's 30th of the season, the most since the 2019 team won 33.

The 2023 season will conclude with a Friday night doubleheader which will begin at 4:00 p.m. HT at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Friday night is also Senior Night as the Rainbow Wahine will honor their four seniors—Amanda Ajari, Cira Bartolotti, Lepepaina "Princess" Matavao, and Rachel "Bueller" Sabourin.
