Van Rossum Named to Cutino Award Watch List

IRVINE, Calf. -- University of Hawai'i senior Emma van Rossum has been named to the 2023 Cutino Award Watch List. Named after late Hall of Fame coach Peter J. Cutino, the award recognizes the best player in women's collegiate water polo.

Van Rossum is one of 20 players nationally to be placed on the list in a collaboration between USA Water Polo, The Olympic Club and the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC). The Cutino Watch List was first introduced last fall with the men's season.

Van Rossum, a 6-2 defender from Nieuwegein, Utrecht, Netherlands, enters her fifth and final season for the Rainbow Wahine. The two-time all-Big West selection and academic All-American has appeared in more than 90 career matches for UH and has helped the 'Bows to a trio of conference titles and a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances. The senior, who has 23 goals in 22 matches this year, has helped UH to an undefeated conference mark (5-0) and No. 4 national ranking thus far.

The 20 athletes on the watch list were submitted by women's varsity college coaches around the country and are recognized for their excellent play. While it's possible the 2023 Cutino Award winner will come from the list, it is completely independent from the nomination and voting process of the Cutino Award as that honor will acknowledge the full impact of the 2023 season. Finalists for the Cutino Award will be announced following the completion of the women's season. The NCAA Championship is set for May 14 in Stockton, Calif.

The 2023 Peter J. Cutino Awards will be held at The Olympic Club in San Francisco this June 3 with LIVE coverage available courtesy of USA Water Polo at YouTube.com/USAWP. More information on the event will be made available in the coming weeks.
