CORVALLIS, Ore.—The 2023 season has been a steady climb for the University of Hawai'i track and field squad, with records being broken and top-10 all-time performances as a consistent norm, while the first day of the OSU High Performance meet was no different at the Whyte Track and Field Center.
Under first-year throws coach Sabrina Mendoza, the Rainbow Wahine have achieved continuous success with weekly conference awards, victories in meets, and new personal marks. On Friday, junior
Montserrat Montanes i Arbo won the hammer throw with a distance of 57.08m. Teammate and graduate
Victoria Solheim finished third with a lifetime personal record of 55.57m.
Samaria Vital also recorded a personal record at 38.13m.
The success in throws continued into the discus, with junior
Hallee Mohr finishing as the runner-up with a significant jump in her personal record at 53.21m, clinching a spot with the NCAA regionals and placing her first overall in the Big West.
Alyssa Mae Antolin won the 200m by over a second, crossing the finish line at 23.72. Antolin, senior
Amy Warrington, and freshmen
Izzy Peterson battled considerable headwinds in the event, but all three finished in the top 10.
The 400 hurdles provided another set of highlights as senior Kū'ulei Moku and the junior tandem of
Tierra Sydnor and
Summer Steinsrud turned in their best times of the season. Moku placed third, followed by Sydnor at fourth as each crossed the finish line at 1:02.70. Moku finished three-thousandths of a second ahead of Sydnor. Steinsrud came in at 1:07.43, putting her at 17
th overall.
The 'Bows also saw another significant jump in distance events, with freshman
Ania Magdesian recording a time of 5:01, a personal best in the 1500m. Freshman
Keilah Wilkes followed in the 1500m open run to place 13
th overall at 4:46.26 for her second-best time in her career.
Freshman
Tara Wyllie tallied a season-best 5.48m in the long jump to make it to the event's finals, finishing eighth overall.
The OSU High Performance will conclude on Saturday with events including the high jump, triple jump, shot put, 400m, and both relays. Events are set to begin at 4 a.m. HT.
