Rainbow Wahine Add Three Distance Signees for 2023

HONOLULU— The University of Hawai'i track and field team and director Tim Boyce announced the signing of three student-athletes on Sunday, adding depth and potential to the roster for the fall of 2023.

The Rainbow Wahine picked up Melanie Pakigan, Breea Selbrede, and Emilie Langschwager. All three will compete for the cross country team beginning in August and vying for spots on the track and field squad.

"We're very excited for the incoming class of middle and long-distance runners for the XC and T&F program; it's looking to be our deepest ever with great potential for the college level," said Boyce. "These three join our signees from the Fall, plus we'll have further commitments to announce in the future."

Pakigan comes to UH as a native of Irvine, California, and will graduate from Beckman high school in May.

Boyce on Melanie Pakigan

"A versatile runner that will help us from 800 meters up, she and her family have strong ties to Hawai'i."

Selbrede, another resident of California, will graduate from Mt. Caramel of San Diego this May.

Boyce on Breea Selbrede

"Breea (Selbrede) comes in with among the top 1600m credentials for our recruits in the last decade and shows great range both above and below that distance, including cross country.

Langschwager the lone international signee comes to O'ahu from Denmark.

Emilie Langschwager

"She adds to our influx of international talent.  She's only been competing for a few years; we feel her potential is unlimited.  Comes in with a very good 1500m PR of 4:36.23."
