DID YOU KNOW?
UH Friday night starter
Harry Gustin has pitched well in his last three home starts, owning a 1.89 ERA and 22 strikeouts over 19.0 innings, with just 10 hits and seven walks allowed in that span.
NAIL-BITERS
Hawai'i has been in a number of close games this season, especially in this recent stretch. The 'Bows have had 11 games decided by three or fewer runs, including six games in the last nine that have been decided by one run. UH is 6-5 in games decided by three runs or less and 5-5 in one-run games, while seven of the Rainbow Warriors' 12 Big West games have been one-run contests.
KNOCKED OFF THE TOP DOGS
Hawai'i is coming off of a series victory over UC San Diego, taking two of three from the Tritons who came into last week leading The Big West. The 'Bows opened the weekend by winning a 1-0 game on Friday, getting a combined shutout on the mound from
Harry Gustin,
Alex Giroux and
Harrison Bodendorf, setting up
Dallas Duarte for an eighth-inning RBI double to break the scoreless tie. On Saturday, UH broke out the bats to rout UCSD 17-8, scoring a season-high in runs led by big days from
Matt Wong and
Jacob Igawa, who drove in four runs each. Igawa and Wong were tied for the team lead with five RBIs over the weekend, while
Jordan Donahue led the way with a .556 batting average (5-for-9).
WINNING IN DIFFERENT WAYS
The 'Bows have shown that they can win ballgames in a number of different ways over the first half of the season. Hawai'i has won five one-run games on the year while also winning seven games by five or more runs. The Rainbow Warriors have also picked up a pair of 1-0 victories and five total wins when scoring three or fewer runs in addition to winning three games in which a total of 20 or more runs were scored between the two teams. Additionally, UH has won four times when tied or trailing after seven innings while winning in extra innings twice.
CROOKED NUMBERS
The Hawai'i bats have shown the ability to explode for big innings throughout the season. The Rainbow Warriors have scored four or more runs in an inning 11 times this year, with all but two of those instances coming in a win. UH scored at least four runs in an inning three times on the way to scoring a season-high in runs in Saturday's 17-8 win over UC San Diego. The biggest inning for the 'Bows this year came in the opening series vs. Wright State, when Hawai'i scored eight runs in the series finale on Feb. 19.
