Rainbow Wahine Make A Statement on Final Day of WSU Open

SPOKANE, Wash.—The first two days of the WSU Open at the Podium provided the University of Hawai'i track and field team with plenty of highlights. On the third day, more followed, adding to a positive weekend before the MPSF Indoor Championships in two weeks.

For the second consecutive day, junior Alyssa Mae Antolin added to her legacy by breaking another UH record, this time in the 60m dash. Earlier this season at the Spokane Invitational, Antolin put herself at No.2 in the school record book with a time of 7.66, finishing just shy of a time set by Kristen LaCosse in 2020 of 7.63. The same could not be said on this go around as Antolin sprinted her way to a time of 7.62 in the qualifying prelims to put herself at No. 1 all-time, holding records in both the 60m and 200m events. She finished just shy of the finals, placing 13th in the prelims with a time of 7.66.

Antolin's day was not done as she was the anchor of the 4 x 400m relay squad. Joining up with senior Nikki Jennings, junior Amy Warrington, and sophomore Sammie Gordon, the foursome placed seventh in the event with a time of 3:50.77. Their collective time is now tied to the record-setting mark from 2020. Over the course of the three-day open, Antolin was a part of three record performances.

The 400m provided three top-10 performances led by Warrington as she crossed the finish line at 57.77 for 17th overall. Her time puts her at No. 4 all-time at UH. Freshmen Izzy Peterson and Jennings made their collegiate debuts in the event, showcasing their talents. Peterson's time of 58.32 is now No. 6 in school history, while Jennings sits at No. 10 with a time of 58.50.

Freshman Kristin Cook had a significant breakthrough in the 60m dash, crossing at 7.72 in the prelims for a personal best, along with sophomore Caitlin Simmons recording a team-best in 2023 for the 60m hurdles at 9.28.

In the field events, freshman Tara Wylie improved her triple jump distance from two weeks ago at the MLK Invitational of 11.87m (38' 11.5) to her new personal best of 11.89m (39' 00.25), finishing at No. 5 overall. Junior Hallee Mohr finished just ahead of her teammate, graduate Victoria Solheim in the shot put at No. 15 and No. 16. Mohr's distance of 13.25m (43' 5.75) is a new personal best and ranks No. 10 all-time at UH, exceeding her distance from two weeks ago of 12.87m (42' 2.75).

Saturday marked the final tune-up for the 'Bows as they'll be preparing for the MPSF Championship on Feb. 17th and 18th, returning to The Podium in Spokane, Washington, for the third time this season.
