Hawai‘i Impresses on Day One of MPSF Indoor Championships

SPOKANE, Wash.—The first day of the MPSF Indoor Championships at the Podium proved to be one to remember for the University of Hawai'i track and field team, with numerous highlights across several events.

The Rainbow Wahine currently sits at No. 4 overall in the team standings with 29 points after seven events and 10 more to go on Saturday.

Junior Alyssa Mae Antolin sprinted her way to her first career conference championship title as she crossed the finish line of the 200m event with a UH record time of 23.90 in a photo finish over rivals from BYU and Long Beach State. Antolin placed second in the event a year ago by one one-hundredth of a second, but on Friday made a statement keeping the 'Bows in the top three of team scoring by collecting 10 points with the win.

As a unit in the 200m, UH went four-for-four in athletes' recording new personal record marks, including senior Nikki Jennings (25.65), junior Amy Warrington (25.42), and junior Gianna Scruggs (25.83).

Sophomore Sammie Gordon paced her way to a third-place finish in the pentathlon with 3,586 points, outdoing her fourth-place finish from 2022. Gordon placed in the top three of five events, finishing third in the high jump and 800m. The 'Bows picked up two more top-ten finishes as Anna Marx came in at No. 6 and Catherine Touchette at No. 8.

Junior Montserrat Montanes i Arbo and graduate Victoria Solheim added to the 'Bows' point total in the weight throw, finishing at No. 6 and No. 7. Montanes i Arbo recorded a distance of 16.55m (54-03.75), while Solheim finished slightly under at 16.34m (53-07.50).

Saturday will feature the remaining nine events, including the 60m dash and the 60m hurdles; each ran their prelims on Friday. Freshman Tara Wylie made her way into the finals of the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.86 as UH went three-for-three in personal records in the event with senior Kū'ulei Moku (8.96) and Caitlin Simmons (9.18). Antolin also qualified in the 60m dash finishing at 7.57.

The second day of the championships will begin early, with the starting gun firing around 6 a.m. HT.
