Rainbow Wahine Head to San Diego for the Triton Invitational

HONOLULU- The University of Hawai'i women's water polo team will be competing at the annual Triton Invitational hosted by UC San Diego beginning on Friday and continuing throughout the weekend at Canyon View Aquatic Center.

The No. 5 Rainbow Wahine (5-0) placed third in the 2022 tournament picking up wins against CSUN and UC Irvine before coming up short to USC and prevailing over Michigan. Unlike previous years, the tournament will be over three days rather than two, spanning from February 4th to the 6th.

UH enters the invitational with a perfect 5-0 record, with all five wins coming against Top-25 opponents, including their most recent victory on the road at Bulldog Fest, taking down host Fresno State 13-6.

Freshman attacker Bia Mantellato Dias is on a tear to begin her collegiate career and currently leads the team in scoring with 18 goals. Against the Bulldogs, she tallied four goals and an assist.

On the defensive side, junior goalkeeper Bridget Layburn recorded her season high of a 0.667 save percentage at Bulldog Fest against No. 7 Michigan. Layburn has totaled 34 saves in the five matches played and, as a team, is only allowing opponents to shoot .273 against them.

The tournament features 12 teams and four brackets ranging from A to D. Both A, and B brackets have four teams, while C and D have three. UH is positioned in Bracket C and is guaranteed to play No. 20 San Diego State and No. 9 Fresno State. The 'Bows will battle with the Aztecs Friday at 3:20 p.m. HT and will follow up in a rematch with the Bulldogs on Saturday at 8:20 a.m. HT. The results of the two matches will set the table for a second match on Saturday as the winner of Bracket C will take on the winner of Bracket B. Sunday will showcase all the matches, depending on results from the previous two days. The championship is set for 11:30 a.m. HT.
