Box Score 1 FRESNO, Calif.—The University of Hawai'i water polo team, put together a strong showing Saturday as a part of Bulldog Fest at the Fresno State Aquatic Center, taking down No. 7 Michigan 15-6.
The Rainbow Wahine (4-0) have won four consecutive matches to start the season, all four against top-25 opponents, while the win over Michigan is the first against a top-10 team. The Wolverines (5-1) suffered their first loss of the season after coming away with a 13-9 win over No. 8 Fresno State earlier in the day, UM has now lost three straight matches to UH, dating back to last season.
For the fourth consecutive match, UH netted a match-opening goal to get the day going, and it was the third straight match of a goal in the first minute of action. The 'Bows attacked quickly, gaining a 4-1 advantage in the first frame, while sophomore
Jordan Wedderburn picked up two of the first four goals.
The second frame produced the same results of a 4-1 scoring margin as UH built its lead to 8-2 at the halfway point. Freshman
Bia Mantellato Dias led the way with three goals scored, including one in the final second of the second period.
The lead ballooned in the third to 13-3 as the 'Bows were in complete control, cruising to the eventual final.
Bia Mantellato Dias picked up four goals for her fourth consecutive match of netting multiple goals. In comparison, both Wedderburn and senior Alba Bunamusa Boix each picked up three goals of their own. Bunamusa Boix continues to set the pace for the 'Bows' offense as she has racked up 16 goals scored in the first four matches, shooting .615 from the field.
As a team, UH shot over .400 in their fourth consecutive match, hitting .441 against the Wolverines, who shot .222 on the day. The defense accounted for nine steals, while junior
Bridget Layburn swarmed the goal for 12 saves.
UH will have its second top-10 matchup in as many days when they face off with the hosting Bulldogs on Sunday at approximately 8:30 a.m. HT.
