HONOLULU—After starting the 2023 season with three consecutive victories in the Rainbow Invitational, the No. 6 ranked University of Hawai'i water polo team goes on the road for the Fresno State Invitational beginning on Saturday.
The Rainbow Wahine (3-0) took down three top-25 opponents a week ago, including #13 San Jose State, with an attacking and aggressive offense scoring 53 goals. UH shot .491 from the field while locking down opponents to a .309 shot percentage. A significant component of the 'Bows' success on offense was their ability to force turnovers on defense, snatching 30 steals in those matches compared to teams only forcing five steals against UH.
Senior
Alba Bonamusa Boix, the Big West Preseason Team member, leads UH with 13 goals scored, picking up a season-high six against SJSU. Junior
Lot Stertefeld may be the most complete offensive player in the early going as she's second on the team with 11 goals while picking up five assists.
UH will have its work cut out for them in Fresno, California, as they'll play two matches against two top-10 opponents in No. 7 Michigan and No. 8 Fresno State. In 2022, UH and UM played against one another on three separate occasions as UH took two matches in Irvine, California in two different invitationals. The 'Bows and Wolverines will tie up on Saturday, with the match beginning at 11:30 a.m. HT. On Sunday, UH will battle the Bulldogs at 8:30 a.m. HT, and come into the match, winning the previous two dating back to 2020 and 2019.
