ON THE PITCH
- The last time out, the 'Bows wrapped up nonconference play with a 2-1 win at Portland State, with the two goals coming just 24 seconds apart in the 15th minute.
- Amber Gilbert delivered the first goal off of assists by Krista Peterson and Kelci Sumida, before Peterson added the second moments later with Gilbert getting credit for her first career assist. Goalie Sophie Augustin turned in a strong performance, making a career-high eight saves with the one goal allowed coming via penalty kick.
- Hawai'i players took home two of the three Big West weekly honors this past week, as goalie Sophie Augustin earned defensive player of the week recognition while Amber Gilbert was named freshman of the week after the win at Portland State. It marks the first time since October 2019 (Alexis Mata) that a UH player has won a Big West weekly honor.
- The Hawai'i offensive attack has gotten off to a much faster start through five matches compared to a season ago. The 'Bows have scored six goals through five matches after having two at this point in the season in 2021 while the 52 shot attempts this year far out-paces the 29 last year through five contests.
- UH's starting forward line of Krista Peterson, Amber Gilbert and Kelci Sumida have packed a lot of the offensive punch for the 'Bows. All three have started each of the five matches and have combined for five goals, five assists and 27 shots.
- The Rainbow Wahine have done a good job of keeping their shot attempts on-frame through the first five matches, as 28-of-53 (52.8 percent) shots have been on goal. Additionally 13 of UH's 15 shots over the last two matches have been on goal.
- The 'Bows have already surpassed their win total from a season ago and their three wins are the most UH has had heading into conference play since 2018.
GOT IT DONE ON THE ROAD
Hawai'i bounced back from a tough defeat against unbeaten Portland with a 2-1 victory at Portland State in the final nonconference test before opening Big West play. The 'Bows got back-to-back goals from Amber Gilbert and Krista Peterson just 24 seconds apart in the 15th minute before hanging on late to pick up their third win of the season. Goalie Sophie Augustin also had a strong game, earning her second win in as many starts after recording a career-high eight saves. Gilbert and Peterson also recorded an assist each, with both becoming the first UH players to record a goal and assist in a match since Kelci Sumida in 2019.
IT'S GOOD TO HAVE OPTIONS
Through five matches, the 'Bows have displayed tremendous depth as a number of players have contributed in all facets of the game. Hawai'i has seven players with a point, as three different players have scored a goal and six different players have an assist. Defensively, seven different players have earned a start on the back line while Lauren Marquez and Sophie Augustin have split time in goal, with both goalies playing 225 minutes each. Additionally, Hawai'i has used a different starting lineup in all five games while 24 players have seen action, with 16 earning a start.
YOUTH MOVEMENT
Hawai'i has gotten big-time production from several underclassmen to compliment its group of veterans. Four different freshmen, including three true freshmen, have started a game while a trio of sophomores have earned starting nods.
- Sophomore Krista Peterson leads the team and is tied for third in the conference with three goals scored while also sitting in a tie for third in the league with seven points.
- Sophomore Mia Foster has started four matches and has an assist and nine shots. Fellow sophomore Jacey Jicha has four starts on the back line.
- Redshirt freshman Amber Gilbert has started all five matches at forward and is the only Big West freshman with multiple goals on the season.
- Gilbert earned Big West Freshman of the Week honors after scoring a goal and adding an assist in last Thursday's win at Portland State.
- True freshmen Eve Bleam and Zoe Park each have three starts on the back line, while fellow true freshman Penny Noland has two.
VETERANS LEAD THE WAY
The Rainbow Wahine will rely on a veteran core to lead the way in 2022. Three-year starters and 2021 All-Big West selections
Eliza Ammendolia and
Kelci Sumida have helped pace the Hawai'i offensive attack while several others with experience have contributed on the back line.
- Sumida leads the team and is tied for first in the Big West with three assists. She is also tied for second on the team with 10 shots.
- Ammendolia scored her first goal of the year in the win over Seattle and is tied for the team lead with six shots on goal, and has 10 total shot attempts.
- Upperclassmen goalies Lauren Marquez and Sophie Augustin have split time in goal, with each playing 225 minutes and combining for 22 saves.
- Augustin was named Big West Defensive Player of the Week after recording a career-high eight saves in a 2-1 win at Portland State.
TURNING UP THE PRESSURE
The Rainbow Wahine have shown improvement from a season ago on the offensive end through the first five matches. Hawai'i has scored six goals through five matches while attempting 52 shots, including 27 on goal. In 2021, the 'Bows did not score a goal until the fifth match of the season and did not score their sixth goal until the eighth match of the year.
