HONOLULU – A pair of Hawai'i players earned weekly Big West honors Monday, as goalkeeper
Sophie Augustin received defensive player of the week recognition while
Amber Gilbert was named the conference's freshman of the week.
Augustin was stellar in the net in Thursday's 2-1 win at Portland State, recording a career-high eight saves while her one goal allowed came on a penalty kick. The junior's eight saves are the most by a Hawai'i player since Oct. 10, 2019, when Alexis Mata recorded 10 saves. She has gotten the win in each of her two starts in goal and currently leads the conference in save percentage, stopping 84.2 percent of shots on goal on the season.
Gilbert continued to be a playmaker on the offensive end, scoring her second goal of the season while adding an assist in the victory over the Vikings. The redshirt freshman put the Rainbow Wahine on the board in the 15th minute before dishing out an assist to
Krista Peterson for the second goal just 24 seconds later. The Honolulu native is also the only freshman in The Big West with multiple goals on the season.
This marks the first time since October 2019 that a Hawai'i player has earned a Big West weekly honor, when Mata earned defensive player of the week recognition. Additionally, Gilbert is the first Rainbow Wahine to be named Big West Freshman of the Week since the league began giving out the award in 2021.
