HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i track and field team is preparing for two athletes to hit the road this week to compete in the NCAA West Region Prelim round in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
"We're excited to have Hallee and Lilian represent Hawaii at the Regional meet on Saturday," said head coach
Tim Boyce. "They've been practicing well and are in good health as we head to Arkansas. It will be a great competition."
Freshman
Lilian Turban had a great start to her season, where she took first in the high jump in her debut at the Beach Opener. She cleared 5'10", which stood as the top mark in the NCAA for two weeks. About a month later, she took first again in the high jump with the same mark. She earned two Field Athlete of the Week honors from the Big West Conference for her performances. When it came to conference championships, she finished second but improved her personal best to 5'10.5". The mark has her seeded 24th going into the preliminary round.
The other athlete making the journey is sophomore
Hallee Layman competing in the discus event. Layman had a great season that included top finishes, including a win at the Hornet Invite, where she marked 166'7". She also played a vital role at the Big West Championships, wherein the second to last event took first place, improving her personal best to 171'4" and kept the team within reach to claim second place. She holds the 40th seed headed into the weekend.
The action commences on Saturday with the discus and high jump events in back-to-back times, beginning at 10:00 a.m. HT.
