IRVINE, Calif.—University of Hawai'i pitcher
Brianna Lopez earned her first Big West Pitcher of the Week award on Monday after firing a pair of complete game wins to help Hawai'i capture its fourth Big West series this season. Earlier this season, Lopez earned BWC Freshman of the Week award on February 28. She is the first Rainbow Wahine to earn Pitcher of the Week honors since Brittany Hitchcock on May 6, 2019.
It was a victorious homecoming for Lopez who hails from Riverside, Calif.. For the weekend, in 14.0 innings pitched, she recorded a 0.50 ERA while holding the Highlanders to a .140 batting average allowing seven hits with seven walks and eight strikeouts.
In her first start against UC Riverside, Lopez fired a seven-inning, complete game, two hit shutout with six strikeouts as Hawai'i held off UCR 2-0. The rookie lefty threw her second seven-inning complete game of the series in the series finale, giving up just one run while allowing five hits with a pair of strikeouts to lead the Rainbow Wahine to a 7-1 victory to take the series.
After this weekend's stellar performances, Lopez (9-6, 6-3 Big West) lowered her overall ERA to 2.13 with 75 strikeouts and 49 walks in 111.2 innings pitched. She has held opponents to a .227 batting average and now has 13 complete games and three shutouts in 19 appearances and 17 starts.
Lopez is just the fifth Rainbow Wahine to earn Big West Pitcher of the Week honors since the 'Bows rejoined the league in 2013. She is the ninth UH hurler overall to earn the BWC weekly pitching honor. She joins Dionne Peltier (1), Amie Stewart (1), Brooke Wilkins (5), Kelly Gentle (1), Stephanie Wiese (1), Kaia Parnaby (5), Dana Thomsen (1), Kanani Aina-Cabrales (1), and Brittany Hitchcock (5).
