SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i women's golf team holds the lead in both the team and individual standings of the Big West Championship following Sunday's first round at the San Luis Obispo Golf Club.
The Rainbow Wahine, who are seeking their first Big West title, carded a 297 and holds a one stroke lead over host Cal Poly (298). UC Riverside (302) is third followed by Long Beach State (305), Cal State Fullerton (305), CSUN (310), UC Irvine (318), UC Davis (318), and Cal State Bakersfield (333).
Freshman
Monica Johnson holds the individual lead after a career-low 2-under 70. The Sydney, Australia native posted four birdies and two bogeys in her round, which she finished 2-under over her the last seven holes. Johnson is the only golfer under par.
This marks UH's best start to the championships since 2015, when the Rainbow Wahine were in second place after Round 1. Hawai'i went on to finish runner-up that year.
Freshman
Mayumi Umezu carded a 2-over 74 and is currently tied for sixth place. Freshman
Hyeonji Kang shot 76, good for a tie for 10
th while freshman
Momo Sugiyama and junior
Hana Mirnik each carded 77 and are tied for 17
th place.
CSU Fullerton's Haruka Koda is two strokes behind Johnson.
The tournament continues on Monday. UH will be grouped with Cal Poly and UC Riverside with tee times beginning at 9:10 a.m. PT.
