'EWA BEACH, O'AHU – The University of Hawai'i women's golf team holds the lead after two rounds of the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational on the tournament's first day at the Hoakalei Country Club.
The host Rainbow Wahine shot rounds of 292 and 298 for a one-stroke lead over Sacramento State (591). Cal Baptist (593) is third while ULM (596) and Grand Canyon (599) round out the Top 5.
UH freshman
Hyeonji Kang (-1, 143) is one stroke off the individual lead held by Cal Baptist's Jocelyn Chee Yi Min (-2, 142). The pair are the only golfers among the 58-woman field under par. UH freshman
Momo Sugiyama sits in a tie for third place at 1-over 145.
Freshman
Monica Johnson (+4, 148), competing as an individual, is tied for eighth after rounds of 76 and 72.
Hana Mirnik is tied for 13
th place at 6-over 150;
Mayumi Umezu is tied for 20
th at 152 and
Ting-Yu Liu is tied for 34
th at 155.
Also competing as an individual for the Rainbow Wahine is junior
Kralyn Salazar (167, 56
th).
The Rainbow Wahine are seeking their first Thompson Invitational title since the tournament's inaugural year of 1986. That same year, Bobbi Kokx became UH's only medalist. The tournament, named in honor of UH's first women's athletics director, is in its 36
th year and first at Hoakalei.
Two other Big West teams are in the field – UC Riverside (608) and Long Beach State (614) – sit in sixth and eighth, respectively.
The final round begins with a 7:45 a.m. shotgun start.
