FRESNO, Calif. – For the second tournament in a row, the University of Hawai'i women's golf team holds the lead through the first day of competition, this time at the Fresno State Classic after Monday's first two rounds at the Belmont Country Club.
The Rainbow Wahine hold a four-stroke lead over the host Bulldogs heading into Tuesday's third and final round. UH carded rounds of 289 and 294 for a 7-over 583 total in the 15-team field.
Hawai'i held the lead after the first two rounds of the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational before finishing runner-up. UH is seeking its third team title of the 2021-22 season and the sixth team title under head coach
Stephen Bidne.
Individually, freshman
Momo Sugiyama is two strokes off the lead at 2-under 142. Fresno State's Jessica Hall leads the tournament at 4-under 140 while Long Beach State's Hannah Ko is 1-under 143. The threesome are the only golfers under par among a field of 87 golfers.
Sugiyama, a native of Gold Coast, Australia, carded identical rounds of 71 on Monday. She already has one individual title this season at the Coeur d'Alene Resort Collegiate Invitational in September and has five Top 5 finishes in her rookie campaign.
