SEAL BEACH, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i women's golf team completed The Gold Rush tournament in third place following Tuesday's final round at the Old Ranch Country Club.
Freshman
Momo Sugiyama carded a final round 2-under 70 to finish in third place individually at 2-over 218 among the 73-golfer field. The Japan native posted four birdies and two bogeys on Tuesday for her fourth Top 5 of the season.
The team finish was easily one of the UH's best of the season as the Rainbow Wahine defeated three higher ranked teams along with conference foes Long Beach State and CSUN. In addition, Sugiyama finished ahead of five ranked golfers, including 13
th-ranked Cindy Kou of USC.
No. 14 USC captured the team title at 1-under 863 followed by 15
th-ranked UCLA (899) and UH (903). USC's Amari Avery took medalist honors at 5-under 211 after a final round 68.
UH's
Mayumi Umezu tied for 13
th at 226 while freshman
Hyeonji Kang placed 23
rd at 230. Also competing for Hawai'i were
Hana Mirnik (233, t-31
st) and
Monica Johnson (243, t-52
nd).
The Rainbow Wahine will next host the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational, March 7-8 at the Hoakalei Country Club. The 36
th annual event is UH's longest running women's tournament and will move to west O'ahu this year after spending the past 19 years at the Kāne'ohe Klipper Golf Course. Klipper hosted the tournament for 33 of the 35 previous tournaments.
