Water Polo Takes Third Place at Triton Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LA JOLLA, CALIF.- The University of Hawai'i women's water polo team split matches to take third place at the Triton Invitational in San Diego on Sunday. The 'Bows ended the weekend 3-1 and a third-place overall finish.

Hawai'i battled against two top-five ranked teams in the country, coming up just short against the University of Southern California. However, UH was able to get revenge against Michigan, who edged them out two weeks prior at the Michigan Invitational.

Game 1- USC 9, Hawai'i 7

The Rainbow Wahine started down against the No. 1 ranked Trojans, giving up back-to-back goals before senior Elyse Lemay-Lavoie fired one into the cage to put the 'Bows on the board. With just under a minute left to play in the first, junior Libby Gault rattled one home and closed the lead to one.

The battle ensued in the second, with teams trading a pair of goals. Lemay-Lavoie added her second goal, while freshman Jordan Wedderburn picked up her lone goal.

Southern Cal extended their lead in the third frame taking a 7-5 lead into the final eight minutes. Lemay-Lavoie completed her hattrick down the stretch, and Gault added another goal, but the Wahine would eventually fall 9-7 to the Trojans.

Game 2- Hawai'i 14, Michigan 13

Hawai'i was involved in another barn burner of an overtime match for the second day in a row. In a revenge game two weeks ago, the 'Bows were determined to come away victorious.

Lemay-Lavoie continued her impressive weekend of scoring and netted the match's first goal. Sophomores Lara Luka, Alba Bonamusa Boix, and Lot Stertefeld added to the scoreboard in a goal-for-goal first half.

With the game tied at five headed into the third quarter, UH finally gained an 8-7 advantage with 51 seconds left on a shot from Morgan McDowall

Hawai'i and Michigan traded goals through the fourth quarter. With the game coming down to the wire, UH had a 12-11 lead coming out of a timeout from the Wolverines. On the final possession of regular time, Michigan scored with one second remaining, sending the game to extra time.

In overtime quarter one, junior Emma van Rossum and freshman Paula Prats Rodriguez put the 'Bows up two goals. Michigan netted one more goal in the second half of overtime, but it would not be enough to regain the lead.

The Rainbow Wahine will have a week off before returning to Irvine, Calif., for the Barbara Kalbus Invitational from Feb.25-Feb.27. For updates on matchups and times, check out hawaiiathletics.com.
