Box Score 2 LA JOLLA, CALIF. – The University of Hawai'I women's water polo team picked up wins in their first two matches of the Triton Invitational in La Jolla, Calif, on Saturday.
A rout of CSUN showed off Hawai'i's high-powered offense, while game two was a hard-fought victory in a rematch of last year's Big West Conference Championship.
Game 1 – UH 18 CSUN 3
The 'Bows jumped on CSUN early and often with 10 different scorers in the match. Sophomore attacker
Alba Bonamusa Boix netted two first-quarter goals helping UH to a 6-0 lead heading into the second frame.
Hawai'i poured on five more goals from five different arms. Senior
Elyse Lemay-Lavoie and sophomore
Lucia Gomez de la Puente notched their second goals of the match and extended the lead going into halftime 11-3.
Sophomore
Bridget Layburn notched her fourth win of the season, while senior
Molly DiLalla kept a clean sheet with three saves, two steals, and an assist in the second half.
Freshman
Jordan Wedderburn, Junior
Emma van Rossum, and Bonamusa paced the 'Bows, scoring three goals each.
Game 2 – UH 8 UCI 6
The conference championship rematch proved to be a barn burner as the Rainbow Wahine picked up an 8-6 overtime thriller victory. Junior
Libby Gault and sophomore
Lara Luka slotted goals in the first quarter, giving UH a 2-1 lead after one.
In a tight second frame, Lemay-Lavoie and Van Rossum dented the twine in the closing two minutes to take a 4-3 advantage into halftime.
The third quarter freshman
Morgan McDowall added her name to the scorer's table, helping keep a 5-4 lead headed to the final eight minutes.
Midway through the fourth
Lara Luka, put the 'Bows up one. However, with 50 seconds left UCI was able to sneak one bye Layburn to tie the game and go to overtime.
It was all Rainbow Wahine in overtime, as the defense shut out the Anteaters. Lemay-Lavoe and McDowall put two goals past the keeper to give UH the boost they needed to put the game away.
