SANTA CRUZ de TENERIFE, SPAIN—Irene Gonzalez, a 2019 alum of the University of Hawai'i water polo program, helped her home country of Spain claim its first-ever FINA Water Polo World League Championship on Sunday.
Gonzalez, the only Rainbow Wahine to claim multiple Big West Player of the Year awards and a two-time ACWPC All-American First Team member, ended a run by the United States of seven consecutive titles in the World League. Spain upended Hungary 19-18 as Gonzalez tallied three goals in the finals match.
Joining Gonzalez in the Championships were two other former 'Bows in Maartje Keuning and
Maxine Schaap, as both competed for their home country of the Netherlands.
