YORBA LINDA, Calif. – University of Hawai'i freshman
Monica Johnson carded a 1-under 71 in the first round of the Big West Conference Championship Monday at the Yorba Linda Country Club.
After beginning her round with back-to-back bogeys, the Sydney, Australia native went 3-under the rest of the way including birdies on her final two holes to post her low round of the season. The freshman is currently tied for fifth, six strokes off the lead held by UC Irvine's Megan Yang, who opened with a 7-under 65.
As a team, the Rainbow Wahine sits in fifth place at 299. At the turn, UH was 3-over but concluded the final nine holes in 8-over par. UC Irvine holds the Round 1 lead at 282 followed by Cal Poly (284), Long Beach State (291), UC Davis (295), UH, Cal State Fullerton (301), UC Riverside (303), CSUN (307), and Cal State Bakersfield (314).
The tournament continues with Round 2 on Tuesday. UH will be paired with UCD and CSUF with an 8:20 start.

Hana Mirnik carded a 2-over 74 and is tied for 16
th place. UH's other three golfers shot 77 –
Zoey Akagi-Bustin,
Ali Schmunk, and
Kralyn Salazar.
On the individual leaderboard, Yang has a five-stroke lead over a pair of Cal Poly teammates Caroline Cantlay and Nicole Neale and LBSU's Holland Shourds.
