The University of Hawai'i women's golf team will host the eighth annual Ānuenue Spring Break Classic March 22-24 at the Kā'anapali Golf Courses in Kā'anapali, Maui.
Due to the pandemic, the tournament will feature its smallest field with five teams participating. Along with host UH, fellow Big West member UC Davis, Portland State and two Division II programs Hawai'i Hilo and Hawai'i Pacific make up the field.
Participants will play 54 holes – 18 each day – at the 6,020-yard, par-72 Royal Golf Course. Tee times begin at 8:00 a.m. each day.
The first six Ānuenue Classic tournaments were held at Maui's Kapalua Bay Course before moving to Waikoloa Resort's Kings' Course on the Big Island in 2019. Last year's event was canceled due to the pandemic.
"We are excited to host our Ānuenue Spring Break Classic back on Maui at Kā'anapali Royal Golf Course," UH head coach
Stephen Bidne said. "The Royal resort course, which is known for very challenging and sloping greens, will be a fun challenge for the field. We have been continuing to work on our wedges and short game in preparation for the event, and overall the team is looking really sharp!"
The tournament is the fourth for the Rainbow Wahine this season and final tune-up before the Big West Championship next month. Hawai'i claimed a share of the Ānuenue Classic team title in 2018 while UH's
Kaci Masuda became the program's first medalist at that year's event.
"The last time we played in Maui back in 2018, we had great success coming away with the win, so we are hopeful we can keep that good luck as we head back," Bidne said. "The weather looks like it will be perfect for the event, so I'm looking forward to getting out there to compete and shoot some low scores!"
The Rainbow Wahine are coming off a third place finish at the Jackrabbit Invitational two weeks ago. Freshman
Ali Schmunk made an impressive debut, finishing in a tie for sixth place at 12-over 228 in her first collegiate event. Senior
Zoey Akagi-Bustin posted her second straight Top 10 finish, placing ninth at 14-over 230.
Along with Schmunk and Akagi-Bustin, also competing for the Rainbow Wahine are junior
Hana Mirnik, freshman
Monica Johnson, and sophomore
Kralyn Salazar. Senior
Sahara Washington will be competing as an individual.
