IRVINE, Calif. – A pair of University of Hawai'i men's volleyball student-athletes –
Rado Parapunov and
Patrick Gasman – earned Big West Conference weekly honors after helping the Rainbow Warriors to a three-match sweep of No. 3 UC Santa Barbara last week.
Parapunov picked up his second Player of the Week award – and 12
th of his career – while Gasman won his fourth career Defensive Player of the Week award, and first of the season.
The duo helped UH win all three matches in Santa Barbara to improve to 7-0 on the season and 2-0 in Big West play. After dropping the first set in the series opener, the Warriors reeled off nine straight set wins and remains as the No. 1-ranked team in the country for the third consecutive week.
Parapunov led the team in both kills (5.20/set) and digs (2.40/set) while hitting at a .422 clip. The Sofia, Bulgaria native posted his first 20-kill match of the season in the series finale in which he also had four aces. The opposite also tallied 16 kills in each of the first two matches of the series.
Gasman was a force in the middle, recording 19 combined blocks in the series. In the opener, the Clovis, Calif., native set new career-highs in kills (16) and blocks (9) in a four-set victory. He averaged 2.90 kills and 1.90 blocks per set in the series while hitting .619 with only three errors in 42 attack attempts.
The Warriors are off this week before beginning a four-match homestand next week against UC San Diego, March 26 & 27 at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
