IRVINE, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball won all three Big West Player of the Week awards following its two-match sweep of UC San Diego last week.
Outside hitter
Colton Cowell was named Player of the Week; opposite
Rado Parapunov received Defensive Player of the Week; and outside hitter
Spyros Chakas earned Freshman of the Week honors.
This marks the second consecutive week the Rainbow Warriors (4-0) swept the weekly honors. Last week, Parapunov was Player of the Week and libero
Gage Worsley grabbed the Defensive Player of the Week award.
Against UCSD, Cowell led the team with 13 kills each in a pair of straight set wins. The Makawao, Maui native hit .339 for the series with averages of 4.33 kills and 1.00 digs per set.
Parapunov averaged a team-high 2.17 blocks per set including a team-best seven rejections (two solo) in the opener. The Sofia, Bulgaria native also averaged 1.33 digs per set, second-highest on the team in the series.
Chakas, a freshman from Greece, averaged 2.00 kills and 1.00 digs per set and served up three aces in match two. He shared team-high honors with 35 receive attempts in the series and did not commit a single reception error.
The Warriors, which moved up to No. 1 in this week's AVCA Coaches Poll, are off this week and will return to the court for a pivotal Big West series against UC Santa Barbara, March 11-13 in Santa Barbara, Calif.
