HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i softball team slugged their way to a 7-0 win against Fullerton College on the second day of the Fall Preseason Classic on Friday night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. The 'Bows (2-0) hit four home runs altogether while getting a no-hitter from its pitching staff to win by a 7-0 count for the second straight day.
The Rainbow Wahine bats were hot as senior centerfielder
Brittnee Rossi led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo shot over the center field wall. A few batters later freshman third baseman
Casey Beaulac picked up her first RBI on a single to right field.
For the second consecutive day senior shortstop
Nawai Kaupe and senior outfielder
Mikaela Gandia-Mak smashed home runs to give the 'Bows a 6-0 lead. The only other run for the 'Bows would come on an inside-the-park home run from sophomore utility player
Maya Nakamura.
The Hawai'i pitching staff threw a combined no-hitter with five innings of work from sophomore pitcher
Jetta Nannen and two from senior
Ashley Murphy. Nannen notched three strikeouts and zero walks in her fall debut. Murphy finished the final two innings, but they wouldn't come easy.
The final inning began with a walk followed by an error. With runners on first and second, the batter popped up causing an infield fly rule, but the ball dropped which allowed the runners to advance. Facing runners on second and third Murphy settled in, got a strikeout and a fly out to thwart the rally and end the game to seal the no-hitter.
The Rainbow Wahine look to finish out the tournament strong with a doubleheader Saturday. UH will face Chaminade at 12 p.m. with a rematchup against Fullerton to follow to conclude the tournament.
