Box Score IRVINE, Calif. – In another matchup with a top two team, the No. 3 University of Hawaii water polo team fell to the No. 2 UCLA Bruins 10-5 in the third place match to close out the Barbara Kalbus Invitational on Sunday. The Rainbow Wahine finished fourth overall in the tournament.
The Wahine scored the first goal of the game by sophomore
Alba Bonamusa Boix as the two teams went goal-for-goal in the first period. Bonamusa Boix and senior
Carmen Baringo contributed to the Wahine 3-2 lead to end the frame.
The 'Bows went scoreless in a quarter for the first time this season when Hawaii failed to score in both the second and third quarters.. The Bruins took advantage and claimed a small lead 4-3 to end the half.
Hawai'i competed as they limited UCLA to only one goal in the third period to keep the game in striking distance, 5-3. However, the Wahine fell short and were unable to find the net in the third period.
Freshman
Lucia Gomez de la Puenta put an end to the Bruins scoring run in the fourth perriod while sophomore
Emma van Rossum rallied to put another point on the scoreboard to finish the game.
The Rainbow Wahine will next face UC San Diego on Friday, March 13 at 3 p.m. HT on the road to start Big West Conference play.
