HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team defeated British Columbia in an exhibition game, 15-10 on Wednesday night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Hawai'i posted four runs in the second. Princess Matavao led off with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly hit to center for the RBI. After two walks,
Ka'ena Keliinoi then lifted a three run homer to centerfield to give UH a 4-0 lead.
In the top of the third though, British Columbia rallied to knot the score at 4-4.
The Rainbow Wahine rallied to score nine more runs in the third to extend their lead to 13-4. After reaching on a single through the 5-6 hole, Mama Rivera came around to score on wild pitch. After loading the bases, both Keliinoi and later
Rachel Sabourin drew walks to push
Samantha Thomas and
Kawai Mielke respectively across the plate. Mama Rivera then punched a two-run single through the middle.
Jetta Nannen then reached on an error to score Sabourin and La'akea Bertulfo added a single which scored both Nannen and Rivera on errors.
Callee Heen pinch hit in the fourth inning and blasted a two run home run to center to give UH a 15-4 lead.
British Columbia got three walks to load the bases in the sixth. An RBI single by Shelby Kempe drove in one run. Damara Begin then hit a sacrifice fly to score their second run. A fourth walk allowed the third run to score. After a pitching change, another walk brought home Avery Hilpert. A little looping single by Emilie Sherritt over third base allowed to cut their deficit to 15-9.
In the seventh, Cassa Courtney led off with a home run to center.
The Rainbow Wahine pitched by committee with a different pitcher every inning.
Ashley Murphy got the start and had two strikeouts with a groundout. Izzy Dino then got an inning of work, giving up a single and got three groundouts.
Dominique Martinez threw the next inning, allowing four runs on five hits with two strikeouts.
Emily Klee faced just three batters and got a pair of flyouts and a ground out.
Amanda Ajari threw one inning and then came in relief of
Cira Bartolotti. Ajari threw a total of 1.2 innings, allowing thwo hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Bartolotti gave up five runs and a het with four walks in a third of an inning pitched.
Jetta Nannen threw the last inning, allowing a run on two hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
Hawai'i now begins a three-tournament home stand, beginning with the Hawaii Invitational which runs from Thursday, Feb. 20-23. Competing in the four day tourney are Iowa, Kansas City and Portland State.
