Hawai‘i Swim and Dive Set To Defend Title At MPSF Championships

Honolulu—The build of the season will come ahead for the University of Hawai'i swimming and diving team with MPSF Championships set to take place from Wednesday to Saturday at East LA College.

The Rainbow Warriors and Rainbow Wahine enter the championships as the favorites on both sides as they're both defending champions from last season. The Rainbow Wahine have won three consecutive titles, while the men won their first-ever championship in the conference last season.

SWIMMING

On the women's side a year ago, UH claimed six individual first-place finishes and four relay golds. All of the individual winners from last year, including senior Phoebes Hines and the three-some of juniors in Kionna Clayton, Karolina Hajkova, and Lucia Lassman, return from 2019 to compete in 2020. Hines notched three first-place victories last year, while serving on 800 free relay team.

The men will have a void to fill from year's results as Metin Aydin put on a show claiming three individual victories and was a key member on both the 200 and 400 medley relays. But with the continued emergence of seniors, Kane Follows and Olli Kokko, along with the growth of 'aukai Lileikis and Talon Linquist, the Rainbow Warriors have the combo of experience as well as talent on their side.

DIVING

UH swept all six diving events and return all the first-place finishers from a year ago, with the exception to one in Johan Sandell in the platform dive.

Sophomore Max Burman claimed victories in both the one-meter and three-meter dive in 2019 as a freshman. He'll have the chance to defend his crown, and since last season he has competed with and beat stronger competition in both events as a second-year stud.

With the addition of sophomore Daphne Wils to start the semester, the Rainbow Wahine are locked and loaded to keep their status as the top tier diving program in the MPSF. Senior Jamie Stone and the junior combo of Ivy Davis and Victoria Moretti are defending champions from last season. They will challenge the field in the one-meter, three-meter, and platform dives.

SCHEDULE

The Bows will have a chance to get off to a strong start with both the men's and women's 200 medley relay and 800 freestyle relay taking place. Be on the lookout for Hines as she'll look to compete on every day of the championships, repeating her performance from 2019, where she claimed wins in the 200 free, 500 free, and 1650 free.

Friday and Saturday could end up being the critical days for men's side as Kokko and Follows will be in action with their events. Kokko in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, while Follows will compete in the 100 and 200 backstroke.
