Box Score 2 HONOLULU - The sixth-ranked University of Hawaiʻi women's water polo team completed a sweep on Saturday at the Rainbow Invite at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex defeating No. 12 Loyola Marymount 21-5 with a balanced attack and No.14 Fresno State with stellar defense.
Ten different 'Bows recorded goals on the opening day of the season. Redshirt Junior, Lalelei Mata'afa leads the Wahine with six goals to start the year, which is over a third of the goals she recorded last season. Sophomore Bridget Layburn ended the day with a total of 30 saves to guide the team to defeat.
#6 Hawaiʻi 21 - #12 Loyola Marymount 5
The Rainbow Wahine led the entire game in order to finish with a 21-5 victory over Loyola Marymount in the opening match of the season.
Sophomore Alba Bonamusa Boix and redshirt junior Mata'afa tallied four goals and one assist a piece to guide Hawai'i.
Within the first minute of the quarter, Bonamusa Boix netted the first goal of the year to start a 3-0 run for the Wahine.
The first half alone consisted of five Wahine netting two goals each. Hawai'i scored six goals in each period on pace to a 10-point lead at halftime.
Going into the second half 12-2, freshman, Lucia Gomez de la Puenta scored her second goal as a 'Bow while the team continued to dominate offensively tallying seven goals in the third period.
Holding the Lions scoreless in the remaining quarter, Layburn and junior Molly DiLalla recorded 10 combined saves enroute to a 16-point win.
#6 Hawaiʻi 15 - #14 Fresno State 5
The 'Bows came out firing with a start-to-finish lead over Fresno State winning 15-5 in the second match of the day.
Five different Wahine recorded goals in the first period along with strong defense resulting in a 5-1 lead over the Bulldogs.
Holding the Bulldogs to only one goal in the second frame, Layburn counted five saves while Rebecca Buenrostro-Gallimore netted two goals to carry the Wahine in a 8-2 lead in the first half.
In the third frame, Carmen Baringo recorded her third goal of the night. Eight Wahine scored and half of them recorded two or more goals.
With steady defense all night, Bernadette Doyle tallied three steals and Layburn finished with 12 saves to earn a 10-point victory.
