HONOLULU- Eleven student-athletes from the 2019 University of Hawai'i women's water polo team have been named to the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-Academic Awards list.
The award recognizes athletes who maintain a grade point average of 3.20 or higher. Hawai'i garnered three additional honorees from last season and the most since 2017 (12).
For the second consecutive year, sophomore
Mhairi Nurthen earned top honors, while freshman
Emma van Rossum joined Nurthen as the only Rainbow Wahine named to the Outstanding list (GPA 4.00-3.71).
Five were named to the Superior category (GPA 3.70-3.41):
Crystal Valtierra,
Femke Aan,
Maxine Schaap,
Olivia Kistler and
Samantha Malouff. Freshmen Valtierra, Schaap, Kistler garnered their first citation, while Malouff earned her second. Senior Aan picked up her fourth straight distinction.
Rounding out the list, four student-athletes were named to the Excellent category (GPA 3.40-3.20):
Carla Abellan,
Carmen Baringo,
Libby Gault and
Elyse Lemay-Lavoie. Senior Abellan and junior Lemay-Lavoie nabbed their second award, while Baringo and Gault registered their first honors.
The team boasted a GPA of 3.25 and was one of 57 programs nationally recognized with a team GPA of 3.0 or higher.
